The James Beard-awarded chef is a little over halfway through her year-long residency at our LA House – she lets us in on how it’s been for her so far

It’s not a stretch to call Nancy Silverton a culinary icon. The James Beard-awarded chef has been a leading light of the California restaurant scene for decades. This is the woman whose Grilled Cheese Nights in her first restaurant, Campanile, turned the humble toasted sandwich into a phenomenon, whose first solo venture, Pizzeria Mozza, redefined the pizza crust, and whose flagship Cal-Italian dining room Osteria Mozza was awarded a Michelin star a year after opening in 2007, which it retains to this day. She’s also credited with pretty much single-handedly bringing artisan baking to LA at her La Brea Bakery.

In October last year, Silverton brought all that skill, knowledge, and experience to Soho House West Hollywood. It couldn’t have been a better fit. Not only because our culinary tastes aligned – our West Hollywood House has leant into its Cali dining roots since opening – but because as a member herself, Silverton knows the House and its community. ‘For so many people, Soho House is a home away from home,’ she says. ‘A place where people come to gather. It’s just a really great environment to both meet new people and convene with some familiar faces.’

Understanding this was a key factor in shaping her menu for the House. ‘My goal was to create dishes that were delicious yet approachable,’ she explains. ‘So that if you’re working or staying at Soho House West Hollywood and having a meal in the garden each day, you can look at this menu and say, “Wow, that dish looks really good. I’m going to order that tomorrow”.’

And order they do. Her year-long residency in the garden – now seven months in – has been delighting members and guests since it opened in October last year, where the laid-back setting has proven to be a perfect complement to Silverton’s Mozza-inspired Cal-Italian menu. ‘It’s such a magical space,’ Silverton agrees. ‘The greenery mixed with the views are unlike anywhere else in Los Angeles.’

She should know. A life-long Angeleno, she knows the city inside out and her years spent at the forefront of the city’s dining scene have only sharpened Silverton’s passion for the region’s wealth of ingredients and flavours. ‘Los Angeles is a melting pot of so many cultures and cuisines that all still celebrate the fresh, seasonal ingredients that make Californian food so special,’ she says. ‘That sentiment is always reflected in my cooking and in this menu.’

Members and guests have another five months to explore every aspect of that for themselves. Bon appetit.
